Insulation Options for Your Custom Home

As a Custom Home Builder in Alachua, Fl, these are the common insulation types that I offer my clients:

1. Spray Foam Insulation. This popular insulation type has turned into a bit of a buzzword over the past 5-10 years due to it's ability to save homeowner's on their electric bill every month. Spray foam insulation is a polyurethane-based mixture that expands as it's sprayed to fill cavities and provide a tight insulation barrier around your home. The main advantage of spray foam is that in the attic it is applied at your roof deck, rather than the ceiling (which is where most other insulations are applied), and this results in a better regulated attic, and your AC doesn't have to work as hard to heat/cool your house. For spray foam insulation to work properly, it has to be installed by professionals and installed 'tight' with no leaks. Spray foam is relatively the most expensive of the insulation options, and for many it can be worth the investment.

2. Fiberglass Insulation.  This is the tried and true insulation option that has been around for a long time without many issues. This insulation option is applied on the ceiling in the attic, rather than the roof deck, and for wall insulation it typically comes in rolls known as 'batts'. The most important factor in whether or not fiberglass is installed correctly is how thick it's applied in attic and how precisely it's installed in walls, making sure to cut around outlets and switches, and properly filling all stud cavities.

3. Cellulose Insulation. Cellulose Insulation is an insulation made from recycled pieces of paper and is very popular in Florida. It is installed on the ceiling in attics (like fiberglass), but in walls its 'blown-in' damp with a glue additive, meaning with this insulation type, it needs to be given time to dry out before covering it with sheetrock or drywall. Many who are a fan of this insulation type like how 'full' stud cavities appear after install.

Over the years I have used all of these insulation types many times. Regardless of the insulation type, this most important thing when installing insulation is making sure that extra care is paid that all areas are filled to specs for maximum energy efficency for the home.
