Where to Start?
Oftentimes, when starting the custom home building process, homeowners aren't sure where to start and where to get ideas from. The reality is that there are almost an endless supply of ideas online, and even many pre-designed plans to choose from.
To gather ideas, social media sites like Instagram and Pinterest have tons and tons of accounts dedicated to highlighting previous builds and many of these accounts highlight the process and features that have made their custom homes special, and these accounts will also give insights to design features that didn't pan out as expected. A lot of my clients who are plugged into Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration have an added advantage over those who are not, simply because they have been exposed to many design ideas and have a better feel for what they are shooting for with their custom home design.
A great online resource for finding house plans are the house plan websites (of which there are many). Before about 10 years ago, the average person wanting to build a custom home would source a house plan magazine or book, which offered '300 Popular House Plans', and would sift through the sections to find options that fit their desired layout and style. Today, with online resources, there are thousands (if not millions) of house plans to view through different website plan collections and specific architects. The internet has certainly given the custom home designer many more options for homes to choose from. If deciding to use a plan from one of these sites, it's important to be sure to purchase the plan copyright from the plan website.
